6.1 quake hits Southcentral

A 6.1 earthquake rocked Southcentral Alaska shortly before 10 o’clock this morning. No damage has been reported as yet, although the quake shook for about half a minute in Anchorage. Richard Rash with the National Tsunami Warning Center in Palmer told KSKA’s Ellen Locker that more information is still coming in:

Rash: We are experiencing a 6 point 1 earthquake approximately 60 miles southwest of Talkeetna, Alaska.
Lockyer: Do you know how deep it was, because our building was rocking right here.
Rash: Yeah, it was pretty intense being close and local, but I don’t have that information right now, the scientists are still working that up
Lockyer: Are you expecting aftershocks?
Rash: Most likely

John Bellini at the National Earthquake Reporting Center in Golden, Colorado, upgraded the quake to 6.2 shortly after ten this morning. He says the epicenter was 59 mile West North West of Willow, and 100 kilometers or 63 miles deep. Bellini says the duration of the quake lengthens the further from the epicenter the tremor is felt.
