Alaska State Writer Laureate Ernestine Hayes for a discussion of her writing that examines our society’s histories and heroes from a deeper perspective. Hayes is the author of The Tao of Raven and Blonde Indian and a professor at the University of Alaska Southeast. It was recorded on Friday August 4th at 7pm At the APK Lecture Hall.

360 North and KTOO Public Media are proud to announce the release of “Lineage: Tlingit Art Across Generations.” Produced in Juneau, Alaska in collaboration with Tlingit poet and storyteller Khaagwáask’ Ishmael Hope as co-director, the one-hour documentary takes viewers on an intimate journey into the lives of Tlingit artists. As Khaagwáask’ writes, “the film spends time with families whose works are present and of today, yet they’d make their ancestors proud, and their stories speak to the future.”

Lineage premieres Tuesday, August 29 at 8 p.m. AKST on 360 North and will be available on demand at 360North.org.

The Juneau World Affairs Council, in partnership with the Rotary Clubs of Juneau and the Open World Leadership Center, present: “Mongolia Today: Profile, Strengths, and Politics” with Mongolian Parliament member Tsogtbaatar Damdin. Mr. Tsogtbaatar is a former cabinet minister and newly-elected member of the Mongolian Parliament.His primary focus is the development of responsible, accountable, open and efficient government institutions at both the national and local levels. He will give us a primer on his nation, its government, and its future.

The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with U.S. state arts agencies to support Poetry Out Loud, a contest that encourages the nation’s youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

After successful pilot programs in Washington, DC, and Chicago, Poetry Out Loud was launched in high schools nationwide in the spring of 2006 and has grown to involve millions of students across the country. Since 2006, the Alaska State Council on the Arts and its partners, including the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council, have provided a statewide Poetry Out Loud Competition.

During Celebration 2016, KTOO Public Media, Trickster Company, and Kindred Post collaborated to produce the Red Carpet Concert: Celebration Sessions. We hauled a bunch of gear and our red carpet into studio shared by Christy NaMee Eriksen and Rico Worl and recorded 8 Alaska Native performances in one day. There are over 150 canneries and fish processors that have operated in Alaska, but only two canneries are currently listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Very little is known about most of the other facilities that were the principle economic drivers for the pre-oil, pre-statehood Alaska. Historians Anjuli Grantham, Bob King, and Katie Ringsmuth talk about the Alaska Historic Canneries Initiative and their efforts to document Alaska’s early fish processing industry. They’ll also tell the stories of the people who came to Alaska to fish by sail and by oar, or find work at the various fish processing facilities.
