A Lemon Creek-area house designed and built by Juneau-Douglas High School students is ready for a family.

An open house was held Friday to show off the 1,000 square foot, two-story, energy efficient home. It was also a thank you to the partners and local businesses that supported the project. Juneau Housing Trust reimburses the school district for its costs.

JDHS students have built about 12 affordable homes since 1973.

Now all this two-bedroom, two-bath house needs is the personal touch, according to Juneau School District Superintendent Glenn Gelbrich.

“I love the design of the house. I think it is a remarkably straight-forward design that is right to be personalized by the people who live here,” Glebrich said during the open house.

The house project is a partnership between the Juneau School District, and Southeast Alaska Guidance Association (SAGA), Juneau Housing Trust, University of Alaska Southeast, Plumbers and Pipefitters Local 262, Southeast Alaska Building Industry Association, and the Juneau Construction Academy.

JDHS teacher Craig Mapes teaches the course, with worksite management and construction assistance by SAGA Construction Manager Justin Fantasia and Americorp’s Jared Wharton.

Twenty bright and intricate quilts color the upstairs walls of the KTOO building. Members of the Monday Night Sewing Circle and the Gold Street Quilters made these quilts for their own homes or for family and friends. The works include traditional blocks such as the pineapple and kaleidoscope, two lively bargello patterns and a child’s quilt of lively turtles. The quilts may be viewed business hours through the end of October.

Its harvest time and the Juneau community garden celebrated on Sunday with the 19th annual Harvest Fair.

Governor Sean Parnell and First Lady Sandy Parnell hosted the Annual Governor’s Picnic yesterday, the last of the summer. Picnics were already held in Anchorage, Mat-Su, Fairbanks last month.

The line for hot dogs and salmon was looping around the parking lot for the Sandy Beach shelters before Department Commissioners and Deputy Commissioners even started service at 4:30.

Here are some of the sounds from Thursday’s event at Annual Governor’s Picnic at Sandy Beach in Douglas. They include State Senator Dennis Egan, Governor Parnell and the First Lady, some of the Juneau and Douglas residents waiting in line or attending the event, and Fish and Game Commissioner Cora Campbell who served up the salmon.

In addition to Anchorage, Mat-Su, Fairbanks, and Juneau, Parnell announced that an additional picnic will be held in a community that will rotate each year starting next summer.
