February is Black History Month! On this episode of Culture Rich Conversations from Juneau’s Black Awareness Association they are having a conversation with the Anchorage chapter of the NAACP! Host Christina Michelle and her guests from the NAACP discuss the inception of the Anchorage chapter, the importance of getting out the vote as well as the goals they hope to achieve this year

A lot has happened, and there is a lot to talk about. Christina Michelle and the NAACP explore the issues on the minds of those in communities of color and why it is so important to continue to have this very necessary conversation.

After a three year hiatus, Juneau’s Got Talent is back live and on stage this Saturday. The community talent show will feature a variety of unique acts by local performers competing for the grand prize, as well as guest performances from Juneau Dance Theater and JTown Sparkle Toes and the Shimmy Shimmy’s.  The audience is encouraged to join the judges as they vote for their favorites in a fun, energetic night that also serves as the annual fundraiser for Juneau Dance Theater. KTOO’s Sheli Delaney talks with the organizers of this community event today on a Juneau Afternoon.

Also, on today’s program, the City Museum with details on a special Elizabeth Peratrovich event happening this month in collaboration with Alaska Native Sisterhood Camp 70 Glacier Valley, as well as the opening of the February exhibition “For Our Children: Chilkat Regalia Woven in the Lineage of Jennie Thlunaut & Clarissa Rizal.” Artist Flannery Ballard previews her First Friday show at Kindred Post, and we’ll hear about more February First Friday events from the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council.

Rhonda McBride chats with members of the Aurora Strings as they discuss their performance at Carnegie Hall. And finally, we’ll listen to Sheli DeLaney’s interview with Jim Powell about the Juneau Climate Report released earlier this year.

This week, we’re looking back at some of our favorite interviews of the year. Today on Juneau Afternoon,  you’ll hear Rashah McChesney’s January interview with members of the Tongan community, who shared their experiences and concerns just days after a shocking volcanic eruption cut off the country from telephone and internet contact. And we’ll also hear a meaningful conversation between Rhonda McBride, Claire Stremple, X̱ʼunei Lance Twitchell, and Carin Silkaitis about the importance of making Alaska Native language education free and accessible to all. Finally, we’ll listen to author Juliana Hu Pegues explain her concept of space-time colonialism.

Dec. 9, 2022: Alaska’s only competitive synchronized skating team performs at Treadwell Arena

Team Forget-Me-Not is Alaska’s only competitive synchronized skating team, and they will soon be heading to the Pacific Midwest Sectionals Championship in Chicago. But this weekend, they will give a free performance for the community at Treadwell Arena to help raise funds for their trip. The team’s head coach will be on the show to talk with Andy Kline about their upcoming performance and more, today on Juneau Afternoon.

Also on today’s show, Grateful Dogs will be here to tell us about their food drive, we’ll hear about the Twelve Days of Christmas shows at the Crystal Saloon, and we’ll get an update from the Juneau Library about events and activities happening in December.
