Red Carpet Concert: Snow Children, ‘The Things That Are True’

The Snow Children stopped by KTOO to perform their song “The Things That Are True” as part of KTOO’s Red Carpet Concert series. The song is from the musical theater production of “Snow Child,” which is based on the book of the same title, written by Alaska author Eowyn Ivey. The musical debuted at Arena Stage in Washington, D.C., in April 2018.

The song was written by Juneau musician Bob Banghart with composer and lyricist Georgia Stitt, who sings and plays ukulele in this Red Carpet performance. Banghart plays mandolin and is joined by Libby Stringer on fiddle, John Staub on upright bass, Eric Graves on dobro and Jason Robert Brown on guitar.

Red Carpet Concert: Sarah Hamilton, ‘Kauai’

Yukon songwriter Sarah Hamilton, joined KTOO for a Red Carpet Concert during the Alaska Folk Festival. Performing her song “Kauai” on solo guitar, the Whitehorse-based artist yodeled on this cowboy tune inspired by the Kauai Old Time Gathering.

Red Carpet Concert: Radiophonic Jazz, ‘Aquamarine’

The Juneau hip hop duo Radiophonic Jazz  stopped by KTOO during Alaska Folk Fest to record their new single “Aquamarine” during the 2019 Alaska Folk Festival.

The group is made up of Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé senior Arias Hoyle and Juneau performing artist Chris Talley. The pair has collaborated on the song and video “Zibit” with Tlingit & Haida’s Tribal Family & Youth Services department through its Native Connections program.

Red Carpet Concert: Revilla, ‘Car Broke Down’

 

The Seattle-based band Revilla visted KTOO during the Alaska Folk Festival to perform a Red Carpet Concert. With roots in Southeast Alaska, high school friends Alejandro Chavarria, Patrick Troll, Alex Nelson and Chazz Gist played their song Car Broke Down” from the band’s May release, “The North Sea EP.” 

Though they played Folk Fest as Amish Robots, the group recently changed its name to Revilla as a tribute to Revillagigedo Island, where Ketchikan is located.

Red Carpet Concert: Aurora Bowers, ‘Rattle Those Chains’

Alaska songwriter Aurora Bowers  stopped by KTOO during the Alaska Folk Festival to play a Red Carpet Concert. She performed her original song “Rattle Those Chains” as a trio, with her brother Ryan Bowers on upright bass and Alan Bent on resonator guitar.  The Fairbanks fiddle player splits her time between Alaska and Mississippi, performing with Anchorage’s Hannah Yoter Band.

Red Carpet Concert: Eli West and Ben Winship, ‘Hand to Play’

Seattle songwriter Eli West and mandolin player Ben Winship stopped by KTOO to record a Red Carpet Concert during last year’s Alaska Folk Festival. The roots musicians performed West’s song “Hand to Play” and have appeared on public radio programs like Mountain Stage and Prairie Home Companion.
