Champion of the Buffalo Soldiers: Shelton Johnson

Does the name Shelton Johnson sound familiar?  Maybe you saw him in the PBS series on national parks. Ken Burns had him in every episode. He also got Oprah to go camping at Yosemite.

As an African American, Johnson is passionate about making parks accessible to all Americans, something he’ll talk about in this Friday’s Mendenhall Glacier Fireside Chat.

On Juneau Afternoon, get a preview of Johnson’s presentation on the Buffalo Soldiers, an all-Black regiment assigned to protect Yosemite National Park in the 1900’s.

  • Part 1. Shelton Johnson talks about the historic reasons why African Americans don’t feel a cultural connection to America’s parks and wilderness areas — why he believes the story of the Buffalo Soldiers might change this. He also explains why he invited Oprah to Yosemite.  Other guests: Barbara Miranda and Amber Debardelaben.
  • Part 2. Winter activities at the Mendenhall Glacier Recreation Area.  Guest: Barbara Miranda.
  • Part 3. The Juneau Animal Rescue’s February fundraising campaign. Guest: Samantha  Blankenship.

Black History Month: Test your knowledge about Black inventors.

George Washington Carver is well known for inventing hundreds of products from the humble peanut — not just peanut butter, but flour, paste, insulation — even shaving cream and skin lotion.

But there are fourteen other inventors the Black Awareness Association of Juneau wants to celebrate as part of Black History month, inventors you probably didn’t know about, who developed lots of products we use every day.

Christina Michelle, a member of the Black Awareness Association of Juneau and talkshow host.

Join Christina Michelle for Juneau Afternoon this Thursday.

Her guest is Kerry Austin of Queens, New York, who will take a quiz to test her knowledge about Black inventors. You can join in the fun and in the process learn about inventors you probably didn’t know about and find out the origins of the phrase, “The real McCoy.”

Titus Andronicus: Perseverance Theatre brings a Shakespearean horror story to life

It’s only a reading of the play, Titus Andronicus — so you’ll have to see this dark Shakespearean tale, worthy of a Steven King horror film, play out in your mind’s eye.

On Wednesday’s Juneau Afternoon, a preview of this latest Perseverance Theatre production, known as Shakespeare’s bloodiest play.  Guests:  Leslie Ishii, Irene Martinko and Katie Jensen.

A dark tale of death, deceit and cannibalism.

Celebrating Elizabeth Peratrovich

February 16th is Elizabeth Peratrovich Day, in celebration of an Alaska Native civil rights activist, instrumental in the passage of a landmark anti-discrimination bill in 1945.

On  Tuesday’s Juneau Afternoon, we ask the question:  What made this Tlingit woman the right person, at the right time, to change the course of history?

Diane Benson wrote and performed in a play about that. Now, 20 years later, she reflects on why Peratrovich’s story continues to offer inspiration.

The success of the play led to a film called “For the Rights of All.”  Benson talks about her role in that project that started out on her kitchen table.
