Lisa Phu’s Before Me is a podcast about a long overdue conversation between a mom and a daughter and a family’s history as it follows one woman’s life, from Cambodia to America, through war and violence, separation and loss, and endings and beginnings. KTOO will air Before Me in a special two-part series beginning next Tuesday, January 17.

Today on Juneau Afternoon, Lisa talks with Volunteer Host Andy Kline about how this podcast came to be, the process of getting to know her mother’s story, the various media coverage the podcast has gotten; and she will also highlight her Fireside chat tonight at Mendenhall Glacier.

Musicians, supporters, and fans from all around Alaska will be gathering in Juneau this weekend for the Fourth Statewide Alaska Music Summit. Marian Call gives us the breakdown of all the festivities today on Juneau Afternoon.

Topics for the Alaska Music Summit include:

  • The unique Alaskan music ecosystem
  • Building the scene, we want to see
  • Money and Art (and applying for grants)
  • Licensing music for film and other ways to level up
  • Music in the community: festivals, venues, and tourism
  • Taking inventory of our music scene (or why we need data)

As well as special guest presenters, key voices from the Alaska music community sharing, and a lot of time for discussion in breakout groups.

Dec. 29, 2022: Celebrating Kwanzaa in Alaska

On this week’s episode of Culture Rich Conversations from Juneau’s Black Awareness Association, we are celebrating Kwanzaa in Alaska with our guests Ibn Bailey and Yiana Natasha Bailey. Our guests will share with us their Black-lived experience of celebrating Kwanzaa in Alaska, as well as the importance and value of continuing this tradition.

As families in communities all over our nation celebrate Kwanzaa this week, Christina Michelle and our guests will shine a light on the meaning of Kwanzaa, the reason we celebrate Kwanzaa, as well as the special traditions that bring this holiday to life!

Dec. 16, 2022: The Impact of The Holocaust on Local Juneau Families

The “Americans and the Holocaust” presented by the Juneau Public Library only runs for a few more days. The show closes on December 20 with a special presentation: 

“Family Stories — Juneau And The Holocaust”
Juneau residents Rebecca Braun, Eva Bornstein, Helena Fagan, and Sheryl Weinberg will share their personal family connections to the Holocaust; stories of loss, survival, and how the Shoah has resonated through the generations.

Host Katie Bausler chats on today’s show with Rebecca Braun about the exhibit, the talk next week, and the close connections the Holocaust has with Juneau.
