Ex-Bethel officer pleads to misdemeanor in assault case

ANCHORAGE — It took more than two years to successfully prosecute a former Bethel police officer accused in a brutality case, authorities in Alaska said with the intent do a thorough and methodical investigation.

Officials discussed the case Thursday, one day after Andrew Reid pleaded guilty to misdemeanor charges of misconduct and assault in connection with the July 2014 arrest of Wassillie Gregory.

Reid, who now lives outside the state, was sentenced to four months in custody.

Soon after the incident, a woman filed a complaint, alleging she saw Reid repeatedly slamming a man to the ground.

Last year, Gregory won a $175,000 settlement in a lawsuit he filed against the city and Reid.

A Bethel judge overturned Gregory’s guilty plea for a charge of harassing a police officer after surveillance video of the arrest surfaced.

State raises waterfowl bag limits on three species

There are more geese and ducks on the tundra this year, and hunters will get an extra shot at them.

Starting September 1, bag limits for three waterfowl species will go up as the state takes over for federal managers.

The daily bag limit for brant geese will increase from two to three birds with nine in possession. The bag limit for snow and Ross’s geese will increase from four to six birds per day with 18 in possession. The bag limit for canvasback ducks will increase from one to two birds per day with six in possession.

Resident hunters in units 18 and 19 of the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta have to purchase a state hunting license and a five dollar state waterfowl hunting stamp to participate in the season.

Floatplane pilot rescues dog from water in Ketchikan

KETCHIKAN — A dog is back home safe with its owners after being rescued from Tongass Narrows by a pilot who had just landed a floatplane when he spotted the animal struggling in the water.

The Ketchikan Daily News reports pilot Mike Hudgins pulled the miniature sheltie named Misty from the water Sunday. The animal had been swimming alone in the channel between the Ketchikan International Airport ferry dock and Taquan Air’s floatplane dock when he was alerted to the dog.

Hudgins had finished giving a floatplane tour when he called out to Misty, who was about 40 yards ahead of where he landed.

He was able to get the dog close enough to pull her out.

A microchip helped locate owner Sean Inlow, who says he plans on getting Misty a life vest.
