Officials celebrate near completion of launch complex

KODIAK — Construction work on the Pacific Spaceport Complex in Kodiak is near completion following a rocket explosion at the facility two years ago.

The explosion, which damaged buildings and left behind debris, occurred following a test launch of a hypersonic weapon in August 2014. Testers destroyed the rocket after they detected an anomaly.

The Kodiak Daily Mirror reports that a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the facility Saturday, where officials gathered to celebrate its progress.

The CEO of Alaska Aerospace Corporation, which operates the complex, says the rebuild is “substantially complete.” Craig Campbell says contractors just have to make a few finishing touches, but he expects the work to be complete by the end of the year.

The company has already secured two launch contracts, with one launch expected to occur by early 2017.

Kodiak pedestrian struck by bus, seriously injured

KODIAK — A Kodiak pedestrian was flown to Anchorage in serious condition after he was struck over the weekend by a school bus.

He was struck by a bus driven by Kenneth Cameron, 61, of Kodiak.

Cruz was rushed to Providence Kodiak Island Medical Center and later transported to Anchorage.

The cause of the accident is under investigation.

Fairbanks borough delays rules for cannabis cafes

FAIRBANKS — Rules for cannabis cafes outside Fairbanks will be delayed for three months.

Fairbanks North Star Borough on Thursday put the matter on hold.

The state Marijuana Control Board says cannabis cafes will be allowed as attachments to retail pot stores.

But borough assembly members say they want state regulations in place before they decide what to do locally.

Assemblyman Matt Cooper proposed the delay. He says he feels as if local officials are currently operating in a vacuum.

The borough is considering zoning rules for cannabis cafes that would require notification to neighbors, a public hearing and a planning commission vote.

The delay on adopting rules applies only outside of Fairbanks and North Pole. Those cities have their own marijuana regulatory powers.

Pickup crashes into car, house, causes natural gas leak

ANCHORAGE — A pickup crashed into a car and an Anchorage house, setting off a natural gas leak that took a half hour to contain.

Anchorage police say the pickup driven by Rosalynn Bayless, 29, shortly before midnight Wednesday ran a red light at Lake Otis Parkway and Northern Lights Boulevard.

The truck collided with a small sedan, continued over an embankment, struck a house and a boulder and came to rest on its side.

The boulder struck the home’s gas meter, which created the leak.

Anchorage Fire Department responders extricated Bayless, who suffered minor injuries, and a passenger who was not injured.

Bayless was charged with reckless driving and driving with an expired license.

The sedan driver was not injured.

Online court records did not list an attorney for Bayless.

Anchorage police describe vehicle in fatal hit-and-run

ANCHORAGE — A vehicle in an Anchorage fatal hit-and-run likely was a dark blue 2003 or 2004 Chevy Silverado or Avalanche with blue lighting inside the cab.

Anchorage police are seeking the driver of the vehicle that struck and killed Joshua Goodlataw, 22, shortly after 3:30 a.m. Saturday as he walked on the Glenn Highway near Turpin Street.

Police say the pickup likely has headlight and hood damage on the passenger side. Plastic trim near the hood and windshield also could be damaged.

Police describe the driver as a slender, white, 5-foot-4-inch tall man. He wore a white baseball cap and gray jacket.

He was with a thin white woman in her 20s. She was about 5-foot-5 with long, strawberry-blond hair.

A second passenger was a heavy-set 5-foot-5 Asian man in his 20s.

Driver in fatal Atka crash arrested

ANCHORAGE — A van driver suspected of driving impaired in a crash that killed three on an Aleutian Island is out of a hospital and in state custody.

Alaska State Troopers say Sonny Iloilo, 28, was arrested Wednesday night on a felony warrant.

He is charged with three counts of manslaughter, 12 counts of assault and one count of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

He is jailed in Anchorage.

Iloilo on June 14 drove a van carrying nine passengers in Atka.

Troopers say the van at high speed drifted off a straight stretch of road, overcorrected, rolled and came to rest on its side.

The crash killed 43-year-old McCullough Jr., 51-year-old Mike Tunohun Jr. and 47-year-old Paul Nicholas Nesbit, all of Anchorage.
