Ken Koelsch won’t seek run for a second term as Juneau mayor. Hours after making the announcement, two Assembly members filed letters of intent to run for the seat.

One of the new owners says the independently-owned Nugget is “a reporter’s dream,” because of its nature as a community paper.

The Nugget Mall has suffered from years of legal and financial troubles. A Seattle creditor is taking over this summer with plans to improve the Mendenhall Valley retail complex.

“Everybody has an opinion,” Micheley Kowalski said. “It’s like everyone in here is like ‘You know, Micheley, you know what you should do in the coffeehouse.’ And I’m like ‘Yeah, I know.’”

A fire that started on an unattended stovetop in Mendenhall Tower in downtown Juneau caused extensive water damage in the apartment complex. Some tenants say they’re concerned the building isn’t up to code and frustrated by the city’s enforcement efforts.

Their insurance adjuster noted that homeowner Ernestine Hayes’ clan, the Kaagwaantaan, are known as the Burnt House People.
